Health and vaccinations

Tourists traveling to Tajikistan don’t need to be immunized, but they should have the latest in Tetanus and Typhoid and Polio, Hepatitis A and Polio. Malaria is also able to be found in Tajikistan which is why it’s a good idea to consult your physician for recommendations on vaccinations.

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and practices. It is your responsibility to be respectful and considerate towards the local population. You can always rely on your guides or tour-leaders to assist you.

The first thing you should know about travel in Central Asia is that most areas, specifically towns and cities are more laid back in their attitude to Islam than their neighboring areas to the south in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it is important to be kept in mind that it’s technically a Muslim area, so some caution is recommended in certain places. While both men and women can wear shorts and T-shirts in the city, they should not wear large sleeves or T-shirts. But, those who visit places of worship should wear pants that fall below the knees as well as tops which cover shoulders. Women should also wear an asymmetrical head scarf. The trip takes us to remote places that are not normally visited by tourists. The locals are modest in their dress and thus you’re likely to be more comfortable in a conservative dress code too.

Language and Religion

Tajikistan’s official language is Tajik. Russian is still used regularly in business and communications.

The majority of people adhere to Sunni Islam, with the minority of them following Russian Orthodox, Catholicism, Buddhism and Judaism.

Food and drink

This tour focuses mainly on soups and meats. In more distant and higher altitude regions, vegetables are difficult to come by. However, there’s a lot of dried fruits and nuts are available to try.

The options for alcohol are limited to beer or vodka. Anyone looking to sample something else – such as Scotch or Gin is recommended to buy it duty-free and bring it along. Mixer drinks like tonic waters aren’t easy to locate, however.
