I’ve put in many years working in water industry, in plumbing related and remedials and more just lately gaining valuable experience carrying out legionella risk tests.
I’ve already been on the road meeting our clients face-to-face, and also I’m really looking forward to establishing these important interactions.
‘What is legionella bacteria as well as am I at risk?’
Legionella bacteria is microscopic and can be found in streams, estuaries and rivers, reservoirs and waters, usually in very low numbers, where they don’t cause any issues. The difficulty comes when these tiny microorganisms get trapped inside your water system as well as multiply, potentially bringing about Legionnaires’ Disease.
According to the Authorities, there were 503 cases of Legionnaires’ Ailment in the UK in 2019. It’s a significant illness which can be fatal – symptoms to know include fever, headache, cough and breathlessness.
While legionella bacteria may cause problems anywhere given the right conditions, some areas such as locations where water will be stored or recirculated, where the water temperature is among 20-45°C or where rust, sludge, scale and organic matters are present, are considered to be at much higher risk.
Those who are more susceptible to infection, including the elderly the ones with weakened natural defenses, need to be especially mindful.
‘So, what can I do to safeguard myself and those around me?’
Employers, the actual self-employed, facilities managers, health and safety officers and property managers, are all among those who have a duty to protect men and women against the risks associated with legionella bacteria.
The rules all around legionella bacteria are really sophisticated and testing has to be carried out by an expert – this is where Acorn Safety Providers can really help.
