Everybody knows the significance of a good first impression. In barely seconds of a meeting, people attain an array of details about us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, bodily proportions, posture, demeanor and the sound in our voice. It’s an essential time since there is no second possiblity to make a good first impression.
It happens … the handshake.
I remember when i took a communications class at a nearby church. The instructor had 30+ attendees line up single file. The instructions could look him inside the eye and shake his hand. I had been confident I knew how to properly shake hands.
Following the last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me what you thought about my handshake. Maybe it was an excellent handshake or even a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It had been a company grip like mine. Shaking Hands confirmed to me I knew how you can shake hands. I said, like everyone else, “good handshake.”
Then he said something which completely involved by surprise.
He explained the main reason everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. In the event the handshake was firm, his was firm. If it would be a light touch, his was a light touch. Should they used their contrary to understand his, his other hand grasped theirs. He was quoted saying this handshake technique creates an immediate good impression and likeability.
Likeability?
Yes. It’s much like the way you feel whenever we meet a stranger and discover we share exactly the same name. Or while in conversation having a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically that way person. For this reason I refer to it as the Magical Handshake.
From here on, I suggest you never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, permit them to shake yours. Mirror their business. If you’re offered a firm grip, mirror a strong grip. If you’re offered a soft grip, mirror a soft grip. Remember to mirror the shake too. It’s by pointing out grip and shake.
The sole exception happens when someone offers you a handshake using their palm facing down. As you shake hands, they’ve the upper-hand and therefore are in charge. They dominate. This is whats called a hostile handshake.
When offered a hostile handshake, respond by giving them a Double-Handed handshake having a wee turn. Start with your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with of yours. Then, straighten their handshake vertically with a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates in their mind, “we are equal.”
The very next time you need to make a good first impression, supply the Magical Handshake an attempt. Get it done if you meet and greet people. It’s a straightforward, surefire method to boost your likeability factor.
